DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES

DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES ACT

Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013

Notice is hereby given that the Minister of Natural Resources has announced the adoption of a new national height reference system as the basis for surveying, mapping, charting, and other geographically related activities and products of the Government of Canada.

The new height reference system is named the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 (CGVD2013) and replaces the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1928 (CGVD28).

CGVD2013 is the realization of a multi-year cooperative project with counterparts in provincial departments, academic institutions, and American and international agencies to improve the determination of precise elevations regardless of the location in Canada.

CGVD2013 provides an accurate and homogeneous model of the height reference system for Canada that is compatible with modern satellite positioning techniques now used extensively in surveying and navigation.

Nationwide adoption of CGVD2013 is urged by the Minister to increase the effectiveness of a host of practical and scientific activities dependent upon or related to accurate vertical positioning, including water management and the orderly development of new geographic information systems and databases.

Enquiries or requests for information about CGVD2013 may be directed to the office of the Director, Canadian Geodetic Survey, Surveyor General Branch - Earth Sciences Sector, Natural Resources Canada, 588 Booth Street, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0Y7, 343-292-6637 (telephone) or online at http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/earth-sciences/geomatics/geodetic-reference-systems/10781.
