SPECIES AT RISK ACT
Description of critical habitat of American Badger jeffersonii subspecies Western and Eastern populations in Kootenay National Park of Canada
The American Badger jeffersonii subspecies (Taxidea taxus jeffersonii), Western and Eastern populations, is a medium-sized, relatively flattened, mottled yellow and tan carnivore that is well developed for digging burrows. This species is listed on Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act. In Canada, the Western population occurs within Okanagan, Boundary, Thompson, Cariboo, and Nicola/Similkameen regions of south-central British Columbia, while the Eastern population occurs in the Rocky Mountain Trench, Elk Valley and Creston/Yahk regions of southeastern British Columbia. The American Badger jeffersonii subspecies, Western and Eastern population, is typically associated with grassland and open forest ecosystems where prey is available and soil conditions are suitable for digging.
The Recovery Strategy for the American Badger jeffersonii subspecies (Taxidea taxus jeffersonii) Western population and Eastern population in Canada identifies critical habitat for the species in a number of areas, including within Kootenay National Park of Canada.
Notice is hereby given, pursuant to subsection 58(2) of the Species at Risk Act, that 90 days after the date of publication of this notice, subsection 58(1) of the Species at Risk Act will apply to the critical habitat of the American Badger jeffersonii subspecies, Western and Eastern populations, identified in the Recovery Strategy for the species that is included in the Species at Risk Public Registry, and that is located within Kootenay National Park of Canada, the boundaries of which are described in Schedule 1 to the Canada National Parks Act.
